We’re Hiring! Community Foundation Seeking Development Director

The Greater Lowell Community Foundation is a philanthropic organization with over 350 funds, totaling some $32 million, which is dedicated to improving the quality of life in 20 neighboring cities and towns.

The GLCF annually awards approximately $1.5 million in grants and scholarships to hundreds of worthy nonprofits and students, and is powered by the winning combination of donor-directed giving, personal attention from its staff, and an in-depth understanding of local needs.

Since its inception in 1997, the Community Foundation has convened individuals and institutions to address significant community issues and has awarded more than $11 million to improve the quality of life for our community.

Position Description

GLCF is offering a remarkable opportunity for an experienced professional to advance their career in the field of philanthropy and community foundation management. The Community Foundation seeks a creative professional who will work closely with the Board and the Executive Director to assist in asset development, donor relations, donor cultivation and community outreach.


Donor Cultivation

  • Develop a comprehensive strategic and tactical development funding plan.
  • Identify and initiate contacts with potential leadership and major gift donors.
  • Work collaboratively with professional advisors (attorneys, wealth advisors, accountants, and trust officers) to cultivate and expand current giving by planned gift donors.
  • Oversee process of establishing new funds by assisting donors in selecting charitable giving products that complement and enhance donors’ charitable goals.

Foster Philanthropy

  • Plan, implement, and evaluate donor cultivation and stewardship events such as small gatherings, luncheons, social events, and educational opportunities to build partnerships with donors.
  • Plan, implement, and evaluate professional advisor educational outreach events to continually update and guide professional advisors in the charitable and planned giving arena.
  • Participate regularly in community activities and events to enhance the image and position of the Community Foundation. Activities include speaking to groups, participating in civic engagement, and overall immersion in the community by networking to foster the culture of philanthropy.

Research, development and analysis

  • Research, develop, write and submit grant requests to corporate and foundation funders.
  • Employ technology and data analysis to enhance and evaluate tactical plans.
  • Establish fund development policies, procedures, plans and goals for all fundraising activities.

Assist In Management of the Community Foundation

  • Attend board meetings, work closely with the development committee chair person to plan and prepare timely material for committee meetings and reports for the board.
  • Meet regularly with executive director and management team to plan, execute, and evaluate strategic and ongoing operations of the Community Foundation.
  • Supervise any development staff and/or interns and provide timely feedback.

Perform other duties as assigned.


  • High level of proficiency in developing major gifts, estate planning, planned giving vehicles, and project fundraising. Also a demonstrated ability to identify opportunities, relationships, and partnerships for new/increased revenue generation.
  • A metrics-driven, entrepreneur whose mindset informs strategy and work.
  • Proficiency in both written and verbal presentations, as well as the ability to interact with senior management, board of directors, donors, and community influencers.
  • Demonstrate strategic, analytical and project management skills.
  • Proficiency in donor development software.
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant major required with five to seven years minimum professional leadership experience in the field of fundraising. Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) designation preferred.
