Derek found his 67-year-old father, Starlin, unresponsive on the floor of his home. He immediately called 911. Emergency medical technicians were dispatched. Derek’s dad was suffering a cardiac arrest. Through a grant from the Community Foundation, the Town of Pepperell had recently equipped its ambulance with a state-of-the-art LUCAS chest compression device. The device delivers steady compressions to the chest, and worked so well that before reaching the hospital, Starlin’s pulse returned and he became responsive. Today, Starlin has recovered and is doing well.
