2018 Annual Meeting: Road to Recovery

Join the Greater Lowell Community Foundation at our Annual Meeting for a discussion on recent community needs data, a response to these indicators, and how each of us can support our neighbors and our community. This year’s topic is Road to Recovery.

Guest Speaker: Marian T. Ryan, Middlesex County District Attorney

Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan has spent her entire career prosecuting serious cases across the county at both the trial and appellate level. From that experience she has learned that as important as prosecution is, prevention is equally as important and leads to a better outcome.
District Attorney Ryan is recognized for her leadership on the opioid crisis and her innovative programs that address all aspects of abuse and addiction—prosecution, prevention, and treatment.
Starting back in 2012, she founded the office’s first Opioid Drug Task Force in the Lowell region, and has since developed a second task force that serves the eastern portion of the county, including Medford and the surrounding towns.

In May 2014, she collaborated with local attorneys and court personnel to establish a drug court session in the Lowell District Court. That program assists participating members with substance abuse treatment and monitoring.

District Attorney Ryan has also partnered with healthcare organizations to develop a program to provide services to mothers with substance abuse issues and their newborns.

She has used drug forfeiture funds, the monies seized through criminal investigations, to fund a variety of prevention and intervention efforts, including: grants for substance free after-prom activities, community drug collection boxes, and donations of Narcan to Middlesex County first responders.

As District Attorney, Ms. Ryan has created a Conviction Integrity Unit to review closed cases where there has been a claim of a potential wrongful conviction. She chairs the office’s nonprofit, Middlesex Partnerships for Youth, and has led programs and trainings to educate young people on, among other topics, prescription drug abuse and bullying.

Nonprofit grantees and partners will have informational displays.
