LOWELL, MA – On May 19, the Greater Lowell Community Foundation awarded 431 scholarships to 247 Lowell High School seniors, totaling more than $700,000 to help cover the rising costs of post-secondary education.
Among this year’s recipients, 62 percent are the first in their family to attend college, 49 percent demonstrated financial need, 77 percent worked a job while in school, and 76 percent participated in community service. The group achieved an impressive average GPA of 4.1.
“These students are extraordinary — and so are the donors and volunteers who make this possible,” said Jay Linnehan, GLCF’s President and CEO. “This is philanthropy at its best: people in our community investing their time and money in the next generation, for young people they may never even meet.”
Since its founding 29 years ago, the Foundation’s scholarship program has supported thousands of students with millions of dollars in scholarships, thanks to the generosity of donors who have established funds to invest in young people’s continuing education. In 1998, Lowell High School transferred 26 scholarships totaling $75,500 to the Foundation to manage and invest. That LHS endowment now totals $7.9 million.
Foundation staff and 83 volunteers selected scholarship recipients based on merit, financial need, and specific criteria established by each individual scholarship fund. High school seniors may submit one application and be considered for multiple scholarship opportunities through the Foundation’s online application, which opens each January.
