When the Safety Net Frays, Greater Lowell Steps Up

Across Greater Lowell, families who have never needed help before are walking into food pantries for the first time. Federal funding cuts have reached 68% of our nonprofit partners — the organizations feeding, sheltering, and caring for our neighbors. State and municipal budgets cannot fill the gap. Community foundations can.

In January of 2026, a single transformational anonymous gift let GLCF move $700,000 to 47 trusted organizations in 21 communities within weeks — no lengthy application, no red tape, just help that arrived when it was needed most. That gift proved what’s possible. It also proved the need is far from met.
